I didn’t get nearly as many posts up (recipes, crafts, all the shit I did this month) as I wanted to, so I’m just going to do a quick recap of all of this month’s happenings – since you know, it’s a whole new year tomorrow.
Sheffield had his daycare Christmas program. I can’t tell you how sweet it is to hear those little kids sing – if you’re having a bad day, it is definitely the thing to lift your spirits. I love that those teachers and the director love those kids, and you can just feel it. I wouldn’t trust Sheffield anywhere other than Cathedral.
Almost immediately when I started my new job, I became friends with one of my coworkers. She is amazing, we have so much in common, and are genuine friends outside of work. We got the itch to have a night out, so that’s what we did. We started out at Johns City Diner, then went over to Atomic Lounge, where I finally got to wear a costume (hint: if you pick the Cookie Monster costume, they actually give you a cookie!), and ended the night at Blackwell’s. It was such a fun, fun night!
The very next night, we had tickets to the AU vs UAB game in Birmingham. We met up with Robyn and her hubs at Queens Park Christmas pop-up bar for a drink, and then when we decided that the drinks were a tad overpriced, we went over to Collins bar for a quick snack (their coleslaw dog is so good!) and then headed to the BJCC for the game. Which AU won – in overtime. We all almost had heart attacks, but it was such a fun night!
One night, we got to go and hang out with Catherine and big Zoe to see Zoolight Safari. We got there pretty early, did the train, the adults had some hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps, while the kids enjoyed hot dogs and normal hot chocolate. The kids got to see Santa and all the lights before it got too chilly.
Fast forward to Christmas Eve – Aunt Juney and Mr. B came over, and we had so much fun. Too much fun – think Fireball shots and vodka. But we did get to see the Hoover fire department with Santa this year, and we watched Christmas Vacation and The Ref. I waxed poetic about having my sister here, but having her here for Christmas takes the cake. It was so much fun just hanging out, eating appetizers and celebrating Christmas together. The next day, we got up early, opened presents, and headed down to Montgomery to celebrate with the in-laws. My mother-in-law got me the sweetest gift – a recipe book full of their family’s old recipes, with plenty of room to add my own. I love that she took the time to put all of that together for me. We had an amazing dinner, and then came back home. It was such a great Christmas.
As an added Christmas gift for B (because he is so damn hard to shop for), I made reservations for us for dinner at Hot and Hot Fish Club. We’ve lived here for over a decade, and have had yet to try it. It was delicious. We had the charcuterie board to start with – I got the yellowfin tuna, and B got the lamb shank. We were both way too full to get dessert. BUT it was so nice to have a date night in the middle of the week – we definitely need to find a way to do that more often.
So, there’s our December in a super recap-py type of way. It was definitely a super busy one, but one for the books as well.
Tonight, we’ll be celebrating the New Year with a tamale casserole, cheese dip and home made churros (pray for me). I hope you all have a happy and safe New Year!
