Mardi Gras is exactly a week from today. This will be the first year in awhile that B and I aren’t going – and, yes I’m super sad about it, so I decided to make my house/food/drinks as Mardi Gras-y as possible to make up for not being able to go. And I wanted to start with our front door. I love the Mardi Gras door hangers that you can find on Etsy, but they are lots of money, and well, I don’t have lots of money! So I thought what could I do? I have these four bags of Mardi Gras beads, and I really wanted to do something with them. So while, I was out at Hobby Lobby this weekend, it came to me! A Mardi Gras wreath made completely out of beads!
This is so easy you guys that even I could do it. I picked up a $3.99 wire wreath circle at Hobby Lobby – they also had smaller and larger sizes — you know, if you have a bigger or smaller door. I opted for the middle size, because I wanted it to stand out on my door.
After digging through all of my bags for Mardi Gras beads, I started out the wreath with all the same size beads. You can either tie them together, or you can snap them together. I snapped them together, because, duh, way easier.
After I got the wreath to about the size I wanted it to be, I added in different sized beads, and Krewe specific beads that we had caught. Bigger beads, smaller beads, heart shaped ones. You name it – we’ve caught it all. Side note: I will say that snapping some of the smaller beads to the larger ones and vice versa didn’t always work so well. I either tied these, or used a bigger strand over them to snap them onto the wreath. Your call – they both worked well.
After I had gotten to the thickness I wanted, I added the bigger beads at the top – the special ones the Krewes throw with their mascot or whatever their theme is for the year, and snapped them onto the top of the wreath so they hung down below. And voila! Finished product:
I love this wreath so much! And it even glimmers at night with the side light glowing on it! Plus it was a fun way to get boo involved — check out this kiddo and his beads!
If you need beads, let me know. I can send you a bag.
