So I did a thing again this Fourth of July – I signed up again to run the Peachtree Road Race! It was the 50th anniversary, so it was pretty easy to be convinced to run it again. Plus, now I get to use it as an excuse to see Brett once a year, so added bonus!
We drove over to Atlanta Wednesday night, and luckily enough, the Braves were in town! We hadn’t been to the new field yet, and it was Sheffield’s first major league game. And what an awesome game to get to go to! The Braves beat the Phillies, 9-2, with three home runs hit by the Braves. One of them even came to our section in the outfield! We met up with Brett and his girlfriend, Erin – who I got to meet for the first time, and she was as sweet as could be. Sheffield ate a hot dog, got some Skittles from a gas station, and even got to stay up super late. He even took that picture of Brett and Erin all by himself. I’d say he had a pretty great time!
Thursday morning, we got up bright and early for my pre-race breakfast of half a bagel. Not sure when that started, but for some reason, that’s always just enough to get me going in the morning. I met up with Erin at the start line (after B dropped me off right on the interstate – which by the way, the cops were not a big fan of), and we just took it easy. They had sent out a weather update for the heat and humidity the day before, but honestly, it wasn’t completely uncomfortable, and it wasn’t as hard or miserable as last year. It was nice getting to chat and getting to know Erin, so I’m really glad I didn’t put too much pressure on myself. We got our post-race finisher photo, said our good-byes, and headed back to the hotel for a shower. And since we were in Atlanta, we had to hit up The Varsity for lunch. Another first for the Sheff. We drove home, spent the afternoon in the pool and set off our own fireworks in the backyard. It was such a great day!
