I got the idea for this post from Kristyn over at Chits and Giggles. Check her out when you get a chance – we actually went to high school together and to Auburn together, and her blog is awesome.
So the story of the engagement ring — let me start out by saying that I absolutely love my engagement ring. It’s unique and beautiful, and despite hubby’s protests, I have zero intention of ever upgrading or changing it in any way. The ring just fits me, and I love it.
Anyway — B and I were invited to spend a week down in Aruba at my dad’s timeshare with my step-mom and him. Umm, yes please, we hopped all over that. One of those days, we went to downtown Oranjestad, and B suggested that we look at rings. I was kind of taken aback by it; engagement hadn’t exactly been on my mind, but I said sure. So into the first store we went, and I fell in love with this oval cut ring that had a double band. It wasn’t anything over the top, and it was gorgeous. I was guessing maybe B just wanted to get an idea of the kind of styles I liked for way on down the road. We looked a few other stores before heading back to the condo.
The next morning B said he was going for a run on the beach and asked if I wanted to go with him. Ummm, no thank you. He came back an hour or so later, soaking wet, so I figured must have been a good run.
But pretty much for the rest of the trip, we didn’t discuss rings. We were too busy boozing it up on the beach and eating all the delicious food and spending time with Dad and Carla.
Fast forward to July 4th of that year when B proposed. He pulled out that perfect oval cut diamond ring with the double bands. How in the world? Did he go back to Aruba without me?
No, Laura, he didn’t.
During B’s “run” on the beach, he had actually hailed a cab back down town and bought the ring. And he had asked my dad for permission during this trip. All without me knowing.
So that is the story of the engagement ring. I absolutely love knowing now that he knew there was no way in hell I was going to get up to go for a run with him on vacation. It’s like he already knew me or something…..
As an added bonus, here’s a pic of the happy couple on our engagement night. (yes, I was completely sunburned and had been bawling all night — but I was SOOO young!)
