Usually I try not to get all soap-boxy on my blog, because frankly, no one really cares, but there has been something that I’ve been meaning to just put out there, and with all my hormonal rage lately, I felt like now was the best time to lay it all out on the table…
Where in the hell did the respect for other human beings go?
It seems that lately everywhere I turn, there is just a general lack of respect for the other humans on this planet — whether they be working in the cube right next to you or halfway across the earth. A differing of opinions does not give you the right to disrespect somebody — if someone lives a different way than you, that does not give you the right to disrespect them. Even smaller things — last Monday when I was walking through the Atlanta airport, some guy pointed (yes, POINTED) at me and said, “Look at the t*ts on her.” Yes, pregnancy has blessed me in that area, but no, they were not out on display — it was 20 degrees or something ridiculous, I had a sweater on with a jacket.
And I couldn’t do anything but just try to cover myself up with my jacket.
Or when the Supreme Justice of Alabama decides to halt a Supreme Court Order allowing gay marriage in Alabama, because he doesn’t think it’s right. (This is a whole other issue on its on — Roy Moore should be ashamed of himself, and I wish someone would remove his ass from the court.) Respect for people who live differently than you. How hard is it? Honestly. Does it have any bearing on your day-to-day life?
Or when someone decides to go out onto social media, shaming a guy who is just dancing and having fun. Why is it so hard for people to just have some common decency toward other people? He does have feelings for Pete’s sake.
I mean, I could go on and on about it — with smaller instances — not having the respect enough to open a door for a mom in Target who has got her hands full — to bigger instances of terrorism – beheading people just to instill fear — but I won’t. I think I’ve made my point.
Bloggers are lucky — this is an incredibly supportive and loving community (unless you’re part of GOMI, and then gross), and a lot of bloggers have respect for other bloggers and cheer them on through life. Maybe instead of giving the world a Coke, we give them a computer and a URL address?
I know this was really ranty, but it’s something that I feel strongly about. What’s that golden rule thing again??
Or if all else fails, just follow that other rule — if you have nothing nice to say, than say nothing at all.
Aaand, I’m hopping off my soapbox now — what do y’all think about the lack of respect you’ve seen lately, if at all?
