As with everyone, this week has been trying. I tried several times to come here to write, but wasn’t sure what to say. I don’t have all the answers, but my goal is to do better, to stand up when I see blatant racism, to educate myself by reading, watching and understanding.
I saw an IG post that featured a woman with a sign that said “All mommas were summoned when George Floyd cried out for his mother.” This resonated with me, because as mothers it’s our duty to teach our children that there is no room in the world for hate. I am a firm believer that no one is born with hate in their hearts – it is taught. I was never taught in my upbringing to hate, and Sheffield will not be brought up with hate in his heart.
It’s crazy to believe in 2020 that we still have to remind people to be kind. I am hoping that this year is the year that sparks change – that people don’t have to worry about their black spouses/partners making it home from work, or mothers and fathers have to worry about their black children out driving.

It’s plain and simple: Black Lives Matter.
