This past week/weekend, I got to try two places I’d never gotten to go to. Mainly for food, because, duh.
Last Thursday, I got to meet up with some fellow Birmingham bloggers for some Mexican food at the new Cantina Laredo in Uptown. We got super lucky in that it was ladies night, and the margaritas that were normally $8, were $4! So we took that as a good sign. And these things weren’t weak at all. No, no, no. They weren’t the usually too much margarita mix that you get with discounted margaritas. You could taste the tequila from sip one to the last. Nadine also is brilliant and had signed up for their newsletter, so we got free table-side guac. And it was delicious. Morgan and I shared some cheese dip (yum!), while Nadine checked out their enchiladas. She said they were delicious. All in all, if you want some fancy Mexican and want to dress up while doing it, this is your place.
the $4 margarita.
the beautiful cheese dip. i mean, how can you hate on cheese dip?
Morgan, myself, and Nadine. (nadine’s pic..stolen. but i did warn her that i was going to do such. )

and her enchiladas, again, her pic. such a pretty presentation.
Then again on Saturday, we met up with Nadine and her hubs, and finally got to try Melt! They started out as a food truck, that I just never got around to going. I’d always seen them at the Barons game, but it takes a lot to talk me out of eating hot dogs in favor of grilled cheese. And that’s in life, not just at a ball game.
But, Melt’s concept is fancy grilled cheese and fancy cocktails. While we had already had a little to drink that day, and didn’t try any of the delicious sounding cocktails, we did get to play a little Candy Land, and enjoy our grilled cheeses. I got the Chicken Salad grilled cheese, and let me tell you, I could have just eaten a plate of that chicken salad. Not to mention, throw some melty cheese, a tomato and two pieces of Texas Toast and that shit was gone fast. They also had a fantastic honey mustardy thing that I couldn’t get enough of. B got the Flyin Hawaiian, a mixture of ham, cheese and pineapple on a pretzel bun. His was gone before I could snap a pic!
the amazingess of fancy grilled cheese.
nadine, nadine’s friend whose name escapes me at the moment, and yo. (nadine’s pic again. i suck. i’m working on it)
If I had to choose between the two for a place to go back to, I’d definitely choose Melt. They have so many yummy things to choose from and try, and while I love Mexican food, I’d much prefer my more authentic hole in the wall five minutes from the house.
I was definitely glad to get to try two new places — things are popping up too fast in Birmingham, and I just can’t keep up!
Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! Did you try anything new and delicious?
