Last week, I got the vacation from work that I so desperately needed. I had mentioned before that I hadn’t had a proper day off since February, so after I logged off on Wednesday afternoon, I said adios to my laptop, and immediately did a happy dance.
That night we drove down to B’s parents to celebrate his dad’s birthday. We grilled steaks, watched some TV and went to bed fairly early. The next morning I woke up and went to Starbucks – since I was the only coffee drinker in the house. I packed up Sheff and he got his first taste of cake pop. What is vacation without cake at 630 in the morning, right? We drove down to my dad’s, and were in his pool within ten minutes of being there. We played in the pool for the rest of the day, and then stayed up drinking wine until about midnight.
Friday, Sheff woke up pretty early. We sat on the upstairs porch for a little, me drinking coffee and Sheff watching a show on the pad. After everyone was up, we headed to the beach for about a mile walk, and then it was straight back outside at my dad’s. Sheff was again in the pool pretty early – while I waited for my sister to get down there. As soon as she got there, we hit Publix for snacks and supplies for Sheff’s surprise birthday party! It was packed, and we were among the minority wearing our masks and avoiding people. We played in the pool alllll day, got Mexican take-out for dinner, and then threw S his early surprise party. He was pumped! He got a few presents, an ice cream cake and a ton of balloons. Seeing his genuine surprise was the best part of the whole trip.
For the Fourth, we got up and headed to the beach pretty early. We were trying to avoid the crowds, and did so for quite a little bit. It was pretty blazing hot, so we were all in the ocean pretty much the whole time. Sheff and I made a super sad sandcastle, we all played in the ocean, and the adults enjoyed a few beverages. We left as soon as the beach was starting to get a little crazy, and went home and went into — you guessed it, the pool. After everyone had had enough, we all got showers, and my dad fired up the grill. We enjoyed hot dogs and cheeseburgers, chips and dip, and watermelon. Before we put Sheff to bed, we set off some Roman Candles and played with some sparklers. Sheff’s face was one of pure joy. After all of that fun – Sheff and I had to take one more dip into my dad’s pool – in our clothes! It was so much fun to share that sweet and crazy moment with him. We stayed up to enjoy a few more beverages before hitting the hay.
I hope you guys had a great and safe Fourth!
