Every now and then, you really just need to get away. A change of scenery can really be good for your mental health. So we decided to take a little weekend getaway to Helen, GA. It was a short four-hour drive, so we left right after work on Friday. We stopped at Com Grille Vietnamese in Atlanta for dinner Friday night – and Sheffield got to try his hand at chopsticks. He didn’t eat much, but it was pretty flippin cute watching him try.
We drove about another hour further north to Cornelia to the hotel, where we all passed out. This was the first time actually sharing a room with Sheffield instead of having a suite. He slept on the pull-out couch, and he did so well.
That next morning we got up and headed over to Anna Ruby Falls. The hike up to the waterfall was so beautiful. The weather was so nice – so very fall. And we went super early, so the trail wasn’t crowded, and we were able to get a really pretty view of the falls.
After that, we headed to downtown Helen. It’s such a cute little German-style town – with plenty of shops and restaurants. It also happened to be the weekend of Oktoberfest, so everything was completely festive. We did some shopping, and headed to Hofers for beers and giant pretzels with cheese sauce. Before we headed back to the hotel for Sheff’s nap, we went over to Habersham winery – had a quick tasting (where again, Sheffield was so well-behaved!), and then went home. They had the most delicious muscadine grape and peach wines – we ended up bringing home two bottles from this winery.
We went back to the hotel so Sheff could take a nap – we watched the beginning of the UGA/LSU game (completely ignored the shit-show that was the AU game), and enjoyed some pumpkin pie moonshine. It was so good!! Since Oktoberfest in Helen was getting a little rowdy and crowded when we left, we decided to not head back after naps. Instead we decided to check out some of the GA Winery trail, and checked out Sweet Acre Farms Winery and Yonah Mountain Vineyards. Both of them had plenty of space for Sheffield to run around, and tons of scenery to look at. We went to a local diner for dinner – I had a BBQ sandwich, Sheff had a PB&J and B had catfish fingers. It was the perfect way to end the day.
Sunday we got up and headed back into Helen. I wanted to walk around and look around when the town wasn’t so busy. We went into a ton of stores, got a few things, and then went to Hofbrauhuas Restaurant for lunch. Sheff got a huge hot dog, and B and I split a German hoagie and schnitzel sandwich. The restaurant was right on the Chattahoochee River, so it was the perfect scenery for our last meal on our little getaway. After lunch we headed on home.
This was one of my favorite little vacations. I can’t even begin to describe how good Sheffield was! It was the first time that he was good pretty much the whole time, and actually seemed to enjoy himself. I was really glad that we decided to go. I hope y’all had a great weekend too!
