2014

2014.
Another damn year.
I’m not sad to see 2013 go, but I don’t know if I’m happy to see 2014 here either.  There have been so many eye-opening things to happen to me in 2013, most of them that I wish would have opened them further.
But as in that old saying goes, life is a bitch.
So I don’t necessarily have any resolutions for 2014, but more a few things I would like to accomplish.
Number 1:  Move the heck out of Alabama.  I haven’t been happy here in forever; I’ve wanted to move since the second I got here.  2014 is going to make it happen.
Number 2:  Deactivate Facebook, and that’s done.  It’s too easy for people to be hurtful, whether it’s being defriended by someone, or having to see the opinions of close-minded people posted for the world to see, just for the purpose of starting an argument.  I’m done with it.
Number 3:  Stop trusting everybody.  Not everybody is acting in your best interest; not everybody cares what happens to you.
Number 4:  Get a pixie cut.  I’m going bold this year.
Number 5:  Learn more about politics.  Maybe even prepare myself to vote in the next election?  Maybe that’s asking too much.  Probably, but we’ll see.
Number 6:  Go back to school.  Whether that means going to get my MBA or go to beauty school, it’s going to happen.
I hope everyone had a fantastic New Year’s Eve.  I’m looking forward to sharing another year.

PS.  Sorry for all of the listing posts.  This is the last one for a while.  Promise.

Christmas in KC

December 31, 2013 · Leave a Comment

Want to be jealous for just a sec?  (Well unless you live in the arctic circle of the US)
I had a white Christmas!
It was so great to be able to spend Christmas with my dad, step-mom and step-brother & new wife.   It was great to be able to just get away from work for awhile, to drink, eat, and watch Packer football.  Even to actually get my back hot, because it was cold enough to sit in front of a fire.
Which I did.  Even when it was burning the crap out of my back, because well, down in these parts, a fire is hardly called for.
I don’t have too much to say, so I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
saying good-bye to my baby girl.

dad’s christmas tree.

irish coffee after dinner.

half marathon training don’t stop just because it’s christmas.

brats for the packer game.

z-man from oklahoma joe’s.  oh yes.

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas filled with fun, family and friends!

Dia de los Muertos – Birmingham

November 7, 2013 · Leave a Comment

This was the first year that I decided to venture out into the Dia de los Muertos festival in downtown Birmingham.

I’ve always heard about it on the radio, in the Black and White, but have just never gone.  Growing up, Hispanic culture was always of interest to me.  We celebrated all of these festivals in our Spanish classes.  And if you frequent this blog often, you know that Spain is my ultimate goal in life.

But for some reason, when I got to the festival, it was a bunch of hipsters (no offense if you are one…just not my scene) drinking.  And just drinking.  It could have just been me, but I felt like a festival honoring the dead didn’t need to serve alcohol.  I don’t know how they actually celebrate the day in Mexico, but it just didn’t seem right.  I mean, from picking up beer cans off the side of the alters, and having to hear people say “I’m important, please get out of the way,” (THAT HAPPENED!!), it just wasn’t for me.

But, the altars were beautiful, so I did get some great pictures of those.

My main gripe about this was that it was more about the food and the face painting than honoring the dead.  Maybe I’m being too much of a party-pooper, who knows.  Just sort of made me a little angry, and I was definitely disappointed.

I do hate saying that, because I do know that Birmingham is trying to get their -ish together and make it a better city, but I’m hoping that this festival will grow and maybe with it, more altars and less food trucks.

Full Length- Fourth

July 9, 2013 · Leave a Comment

Now that I’ve had some time to settle down (ahem, sober up) from the Fourth weekend, I should be able to explain a little better about it.

My Dad and step-mom came in for the holiday, and the first night here, of course we took them to Slice, again for an amazing pizza.  We also got the baked feta this time, and y’all!  They aren’t playing around with that stuff!  I could have eaten (or could eat) it for a meal (every day).  But alas, because of some stupid bet I made at work ( you know, those dumb bets where you say you can drink the most water on one day and you end up drinking a gallon and a half of water?  yep, that happens), I could only manage one slice of pizza and a couple pieces of cracker with the feta on it.  Super bummed out.  But I learned my lesson, and also learned that there is something called water drunk.  Hmmm, might have to look into that a little bit further.

Anyway, after a pleasant night outside with a few cocktails, we all went to bed to get ready for the next day’s festivities which included, but are not limited to:  failing miserably at making cake pops, hanging fans from Party City on our kitchen ceiling, making Ramen Noodle Salad (recipe to come!), smoking meat, entertaining three children, and watching a short fireworks show in the rain.

It was a really great night.  ‘Scuse the crying looking eyes; I tend to get emotional around the Fourth.  Who knows why?  I suppose I have some issues.

Hope yours was a great one too!!

Fourth Quickie

July 6, 2013 · Leave a Comment

Have you ever had Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” stuck in your head for three days straight?  Well, welcome to my hell.  For some reason, I just can’t get it out.  If anyone has any suggestions on a song that is equally as catchy, please let me know.  I’ll owe you big time.

Our Fourth was spectacular; there will be many more pictures to come, but this one is my absolute favorite from the day:

These are my sweet sweet friends Ingrid and Natalie, and her little one Lucas.  I absolutely adore these people, even the child.  Cuz if you know me, you know I have a weird thing with babies, BUT I held this one.  Until he started crying, then promptly into Daddy’s arms he went.  Even though it rained (and we couldn’t use our brand new patio furniture, which probably pissed me off more than anything!), we ate our BBQ (some of us just ate corn — children are weird), played some Mario Kart, and watched fireworks in the rain.

I hope y’all had a safe and Happy Fourth!
