what to do: The Sour Room

February 17, 2017 · 1 Comment

I mentioned last weekend B and I got to have a date night – so we opted for dinner and then a few beverages.  I had been wanting to try this Avondale brewery spin-off The Sour Room for awhile.  I love sour beers and ciders, and heard this was the place to be!

We walked in around 830 on a Saturday night, and were pleasantly surprised to see that the place wasn’t completely crowded – we were even lucky enough to snag a seat at the bar.  It wasn’t loud; it wasn’t pretentious, and it was exactly what I wanted in a place where I was going to drink.

After B and I perused the chalkboard, we decided on a flight of the four we wanted to try (we did actually end up getting another flight to try a few more).  The first four we tried were:  Plum Crazy, Juicy and Fruity IPA, De La Grange, and Blend #1.

My absolute favorite was the Juicy and Fruity IPA– duh, as I’m an IPA girl, but even B, who does not like IPAs, liked this one.  We were informed to save the Blend #1 for last as it’s a palate wrecker.  We followed directions, and drank that one last, and ended up really loving it.

If you like sour/tart beers, then this is definitely the place for you.  The people behind the bar seem to have a genuine passion for what they’re doing.  The beers are very “clean,” and I like that you can take home a bottle of your favorite straight from there – albeit, they don’t have every single one available yet, and the bartender did say they expect to do growlers of their larger batches sometime in the future.

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend in Birmingham, definitely check this place out.  You won’t be sorry!

Post Office Pies – Avondale

June 17, 2014 · 4 Comments

In case I’ve never mentioned it before, I love pizza.
To me, there is nothing better on this earth.  Nothing.  It is better than rainbows; it is better than unicorns and puppies; it is better than cabins in the mountains or the beach.  It just is.
So when I had heard months before of another pizza place opening up in Birmingham, I knew that I had to try it out.  It’s squeezed into the place between Avondale Brewery and Saw’s Soul Kitchen, in an old post office.  Hence the name.  Also, if you didn’t catch that, don’t worry.  B had to tell me when I asked, “I wonder why they call it Post Office Pies?”
Duh.
Anyway, once you get in there, you order your pizza and beverages (I have heard they have some superb cocktails, and all the girls had some pinky/purple drink, but this girl loves pizza with beer) right at the front, grab a number and go to sit and wait on your amazingess to arrive at your table.
We ordered the Swine Pie — full of piggy goodness.  They bring it out right on the server; no plates necessary and you’ve got a roll of paper towels.  Simple, right?  Simple and awesome.

Another awesome thing about this place?  Open late night y’all!  Go have yourself a couple of beers next door at Avondale and then pop right on into POPs and get yourself a pie!

Light Tunnel Photo Shoot

May 16, 2014 · 3 Comments

If you live in or around Birmingham, I know you’ve seen these beauties:
They’re the light tunnels!
I know if you’ve been to a Baron’s game, you sort of have to walk through one of them from the parking lot. (PS, don’t pay for parking…you can park along side the street right next to it for free!).
So after a few brewskies and after three, yes three, fifty cent hot dogs, what’s a girl to do except go play in said light tunnels?  Even maybe a mini-photo shoot?  And the hot dogs are fifty cents on Tuesday, for anyone who caught that the hots dogs were only fifty cents, and seriously, what’s a baseball game without a hot dog or three?
Now I know what you’re thinking…that lighting…how horrible!  And yes, yes it was.  But, you are really not thinking much about that after your night of baseball game drinking and a trip across the street to Good People.  So here my friends are my amazing (ahem, NOT) pictures from a night in the light tunnels..

Some more real life proof ladies and gentlemen, that I am, in fact, a huge dork.
Hope y’all have a good weekend!!

You Think Ya Know….

May 21, 2013 · Leave a Comment

I’ve really come to a breaking point with people lately.  I am so tired of people thinking they can treat me whatever the hell way they want.  I have never once done something to purposefully harm somebody and to get this text,

“I don’t want to be ugly, but your company has threaten legal action against me and I really don’t care to have anything to do with you,”

really pushed me over the edge.

Apparently this person got some incredibly false information from someone else, but you know what, that’s fine.  I’m tired of caring about it.  Obviously this person is not worth being in my life, and since he isn’t mature enough to come to me and ask, then I could care less about him and his life.  So there’s that…

This past weekend I went to my dad’s.  It was a much much needed time away from anything work related.  It was nice to just push everything from my mind and just focus on being with my dad.  I tell ya, being in transportation is not for the weak.  I’m not even sure that I belong there.

A few pictures from the weekend…

We went to an Art Festival on Saturday at the Power and Light District; I found B the best anniversary present, and I’m really excited to give it to him.  Unfortunately, it was a little too big to put on the plane, so he won’t get it until July when they come down here.

It was a good, good weekend.  I wish I didn’t have to leave and come back here to all of this, but here we are.  Life’s not perfect, but I am trying.

Felix’s Fish Camp – Mobile

February 14, 2013 · Leave a Comment

You didn’t honestly think that you were not going to get food posts from Mobile right?  I mean on the Gulf = awesome sea food.  So awesome that we did it twice.
We were searching for some great stuff from the minute we left Birmingham.  B and I.  We love being near the beach; any where that smells of salt air and where we can walk in sand is pretty much our heaven.  I guess you could say our dream retirement home will be on the Gulf.  I mean, nothing prettier than the water and sand of the Alabama Gulf Shore.  One of the things that I would have missed moving to Austin would have been being only four hours from that amazingness.
Good with the bad though.
So of course, we consulted our best friend Yelp! and he told us about this great place, Felix’s Fish Camp.  And it was definitely all those amazing reviews it had and more.

One icky think about this place; Bloody Mary was no good.  Too much pickle juice and citrus.  Not to even mention the name of it was “Red Tide.”  Just not very good at all.  I made B finish mine.

B had the crabcakes over fried green tomatoes with fritters and succotash.

I had the soft shell crab panini.  So delicious.
After this we headed to check in to the hotel.  We had brought flasks (those call out things take forever!), and decided we needed some mixers and a case of beer.  We walked to the convenience store next to the hotel and they were charging $23 for a 12- pack of Mich Ultra.  Um, no.  So we got in the car and headed to a CVS.  That we’re both pretty sure almost got robbed while we were there.
Plus their credit card machine didn’t work.  Again, thanks to my handy dandy hubs, he had cash and all was well.  We were just glad to get out of there.  Before it almost got robbed again.
